Let's take a tour of NHL:EHM

Firstly, there are probably more things in this game that the average person doesn't know about because of the weird way it is all layed out. Don't be frusterated by this! Let's simply take a tour. Sure this will take a few minutes and you really do have better things to do with your time right? If you don't, you may well be glad you did this!

Start with the all powerful GM menu. In the upper left corner is your name. See it?

From this menu, select 'Board Confidence'. This is an important place to know about, This is where you can find out what your board thinks of you as a manager. It is also where you can do such things like ask for Arena expansion, invest in extra practice facilities, ask for extra funds and the all-important, ask for extra time to rebuild your team! You may also complain about a referee if you feel you have been treated unfairly in a game!

Now for a stroll into the 'Player & Staff Search'. A lot can be done here. This where you can send out your scouts, find staff, find free agents and edit/view your shortlist.

It will take some playing and tinkering to find everything here, the filters options are nice when trying to find something specific. A few tidbits on screen here:

  1. Shortlist is where players you are keeping tabs are kept. If you wish to remove a player from your shortlist, simply go to his player card and use 'Action' and the 'Remove From Shortlist'. Same steps to add someone to your shortlist.
  2. Your finances screen is VERY important, keep a close eye on your expenses or you may find yourself being run out of town quickly!
  3. The tutorial on how to use your scouts can be found here.

A place a lot of people seem to keep looking for is the 'General Managers Options' area, this is where you can set your options for coaching games yourself or not! Here is a snip of what you will see there:

As you can see, this is where you Go On Vacation, set your strategies for when you are away, and make it so you don't have to coach the games anymore. This is an important screen!

Now that you are aware of the exsistance of the GM menu, play with it and find all the stuff in it. Sure I could show you all the screens, but that would nothing left for your adventure later.

Let's roll on to the next massive menu of importance. The general, but very tricky, Roster screen. You've seen this screen, but have you ever really SEEN this screen? There are more places to go from here than a dude at a stud farm. Here is the general look:

Notice the 'Roster' option on the left is white? That is where you are now. There is a lot of menus on the side there, and at the top, what to do? where to go? Always keep in the mind that the blue pulldown menus at the top always work with the current view on the screen (the ones with the little arrows pointing down).

Back to the left menu. The statistics tab will show you just that, your teams statistics. It is important to keep up with who is performing well and who isn't. This will help with that.

The transactions tab will show you what transactions you have made. Toggle the view by using the pulldown above it.

The next game tab will give you insight on your next opponent. Be ready and try to always play game by game. You will have far greater success if you don't just auto sim through seasons at a time.

The schedule tab is for looking at your schedule (who would have thunk it?). It is also for setting your schedule. To learn anout setting games, go here.

Personnel is a list of the staff curently working for you.

Info. is a pretty general thing to call a tab, but it has lots of, well, info. The pulldown menu will show you a few useful tidbits to know. Have a look at them. Go ahead, I will wait here.

Done? Ok, let's move on to the next tabs.... the management tabs. Tactics is where you set your lines and important strategies. While I am sure you set your lines, I can't stress enough the importance of using the 'Team Orders' button. Here is a pic of what I mean:

on the left side there is the team orders button, use it! There is 2 screen in it, be sure to set your captains and such here. This can make a difference.

Now back to the menu we were at before...... next on the list is Practice. This is where you set your training for players. A more in depth tutorial on training is due to be added soon!

The Last game tab will give you a review on your previous game. It is a great thing to have, being able to find out why you lost 6-1, or what penalty you didn't like so you can complain about a referee.

Your league tab (NHL here) will take you to an overview of the league you are playing.

Check out the History tab. It creates a whole new menu of stuff on the left side to view. There is a lot of stuff kept here that we all you know you crave to pour through. Tour this area to see what you can view.

Now the last 3 tabs left are the general navigation tabs. Those are the 3 tabs that take you to the places you go most. News, Rosters and Standings.

The top menu still has the 'Browse' option. This is a shortcut around all the leagues and prospect ratings areas. Here is a look at what you see:

From here you can find things quickly and easily, if you know what you are looking for.

The Game Options tab has a lot more than game options in it... who knew? From here you can also view your GM hall of fame. Here is a look at the options:

Aside from being able to save your game, check the status of your GM's and configure the games setup, there is also some neat stuff here. The selected leagues tab will show you what leagues you have in the game and allow you to set them up the way you like (Standard or Enhanced). The hall of fame, as mentioned will show you the top GM scores in single season incriments. This will show you where you measure up compared to other GM's year by year. The game credits will feature such action packed stuff as people! Wow! But don't forget to check out the list of websites, starring the always helpful fhockey.com!

Before we end this little tour, let's take a moment to look at a players card. Click on a player to bring up his own screen.

A lot of options are in here, so let's have a list of them one by one shall we?

The 'See Also' tab will be there if you want to switch to other players similar to the one you are looking at. You will understand once you look at it.

The 'Action' tab is probably the most important one, this where you do stuff! The options in this menu change depending on the player, but this is where you send guys to the minors, negotiate their contract, discipline them. Just have a look, you will see a lot of things depending on what player you view.

Below the Action tab is a bunch of helpful information. These are things you will want to explore more once you are ready. The scout Report is a very useful tool to help determine what players you should be promoting/demoting. It isn't lighting up you say? Well, scout the player, or if he is on your team, wait until he has played a game.

Staff screens are a lot like the players screen, except with fewer options, so you can go look at them anytime also.

By now you have a basic understanding of the game and what you can do with it. There is always more to explore, but the basic idea of this tutorial was to help you feel more comfortable using the game. Do you feel more comfortable now? It isn't quite so confusing anymore? Maybe it was just a waste of your time? No matter what the result, as long as you learned 1 thing it was worth it.
